Genre Research Blog: Horror

Horror movies commonly use high angles to show a power struggle between the main character and the villain. Very shaky camera movement is used a lot as well. It makes people feel panicked and can be used to make a chase scene more intense.

There is also music that instills a feeling of anxiety and uneasiness. This music may resemble metallic scraping sounds. Music has a significant impact on people's emotions so it must be utilized to achieve certain feelings

Gore is also a very important aspect when it comes to horror movies. Horror is supposed to make people feel uncomfortable and gore is a very great way to achieve that.

Very horrific makeup is important too. Horror movie villains have to be able to scare the audience so production companies use makeup and costumes that instill fear.

Many horror movies feel chaotic and one way they achieve this is by sporadic jump cuts. They do this so the watcher never feels like they get a chance to rest. It keeps the watcher on their toes throughout the intense scenes.

Some examples of horror films are Scream, Halloween, and the Fear Street movie series.

Our group liked that in the horror genre lighting is used in many ways. This grasps the watcher's attention, leaving them to want more.

Our group may have trouble with horror because our pitch does not have very many opportunities for gore or intense scenes. We want to focus more on technology and psychological horror.
